April 24th - Spouting Horn, Poipu and Tree Tunnel

At the end of the afternoon we drove down from Waimea and stopped at the town of Poipu on the south shore. I think this is the drier side of the island. There are many elaborate resorts here.

The Spouting Horn is a relatively famous landmark. The waves crash into a lava tube that has it's mouth at sea level. The water rushes up the tube and is forced out a vent at the top of the tube, giving a display like a small geyser. Here are my three best pictures of the tube in action.

Here is a photo looking along the beach at the Spouting Horn. It isn't ideal for sunbathing, but is beautiful.

Looking the other direction (east) from the Spouting Horn is Poipu. More beautiful landscape!

Driving north from Poipu along route 520 takes you through the Tree Tunnel. In 1911, a long string of eucalyptus trees was planted on both sides of this road as a windbreak. Now the trees are fully grown, and for about mile these closely spaced trees shade the roadway. I was surprised to find I didn't have a picture - guess you'll have to go to Kauai to see it for yourself. (Or else go to Google, click on Images, and type Kauai Tree Tunnel - that produces plenty of photos)
