We used frequent flier miles to book our round trip to Portugal. If we had to cancel, the frequent flier miles would have gone back into the account.
Because we didn't pick up the car until we left Lisbon, we only needed the car for a total of 11 days.
An International Drivers permit is not required in Portugal though I recall they were rather cheap and easy to get at AAA. I thought about getting one but did not.
We rented a manual transmission Opel Corsa from Budget. The car rental agent tried to convince me to take a bigger car because "it would be more comfortable" - but good luck trying to park a bigger car along the tiny streets of Portugal. We drove 1922 Km during our stay in Portugal. The car came with an automatic tolling device attached to the windshield, which allowed us to roll through the Green Check lanes at the many toll booths we drove through.
All of our hotels had a free breakfast except for the Ibis hotels which charged extra. Starr Inn is right at the Lisbon airport; we booked it so we wouldn't need a shuttle or bus to get to the airport for our flight early the next morning. Even though our flight from Lisbon took off at 5 AM, the Starr Inn breakfast opened at 2 AM!! So we got an unexpected breakfast after all.
We stayed in an Ibis hotel when we were in Kyoto, and it turned out to be a pretty nice budget hotel, so I selected Ibis hotels for us in Porto and Évora
I tried to minimize the number of times we changed hotels, thus there were 5 hotels where we spend more than one night.
