Košice is the second biggest city in Slovakia, after Bratislava (the capital). We rented an apartment through AirBnB and spent 5 nights in the city. We were locate up on a hill, just about a kilometer west of the old town area. We explored Košice on a Saturday when the archives were closed. We also walked down the hill to the old town of Košice during the evenings, to see the sights in a different light.

Running through the center of Košice is Hlavná street. This broad street is closed to vehicles, it is a pedestrian only zone, which makes a nice environment for exploring the old town. All of the main sights of Košice are located here. Given its importance, I was surprised at how uncrowded it was.

The biggest attraction in Košice is St. Elisabeth's cathedral. We spent a good deal of time inside, looking at all the old religious icons and artwork. This cathedral allows visitors to take photos indoors, so I have included a whole bunch of them here. The cathedral also allows visitors to climb the north bell tower for a nominal fee. We climbed up there for a 360 degree view over the rooftops of the city.

For normal tourists, I don't think there is than one day's worth of sights to see in Košice. We stayed 5 days because we wanted to visit relatives and to visit the archives. There are several famous caves just a couple of hours to the west of Košice; we spent one full day there. The caves are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage of significant places. The Herlarny cold geyser is about an hour drive to the east, it erupts about every 36 hours.

I looked online for guided walking tours of Košice in English, but the only tours that I could find were remarkably expensive, so we skipped that idea. We also wanted to see the archaeological exhibit for the old city walls/gate that are being dug up at the south end of Hlavná street, but both times we tried to visit, it was closed.
