Longview to Astoria

63 miles, 138 miles trip total

September 8th

We rolled down that steep hill from the Air B-n-B and right into Longview, where we ate at McDonald's for breakfast.

Today we turned west, and rode along the north bank of the Columbia River on route 4. About halfway through our ride, we crossed on a bridge over the northern channel of the Columbia at the town of Cathlamet. To cross the southern channel of the Columbia requires a ferry ride - and we just missed the noon ferry. It was pulling away from the dock as we rode up. So we ate lunch while waiting for the 1 PM. An hour later, we were in Oregon.

Our route continued west on busy US 30 to Astoria. There was a big hill (650') to climb right after Westport. At the bottom of the hill, we exited US30 and found a much quieter, parallel backroad. A local saw us looking at the route map, and he told us to take old US30, which was an excellent suggestion.

The final few miles for this day were on the Astoria Riverwalk, which is right beside the Columbia River.

When we got to the VRBO in Astoria, the code for the front door didn't work. It turned out that the host had given me a code of #8050 when the actual code was #8055.

We ate dinner this night in an Astoria tavern which took at least an hour to cook a hamburger.
